From debut to dominance: BLACKPINK’s background

The label YG Entertainment formed the South Korean girl group, composed of four members: Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. On Jimmy Kimmel Live, Rosé explained what the name BLACKPINK meant. She stated, “We kind of felt like those two colors represented us the most, ‘cause we’re very girly but at the same time we’re very savage too.”

Blackpink debuted in August 2016 with their single album ‘Square One’. It featured the hits ‘Boombayah’ on the US Billboard World Digital Songs chart and ‘Whistle’ on the Circle Digital Chart in South Korea.

Its music video became the first most viewed video within 24 hours of uploading by a Korean girl group. The group further set multiple Guinness World Records for its video ‘How You Like That’ (2020).
